Fifteen high school students representing Gibraltar, Sevastopol, Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door school districts have joined forces with the Door County Home Builders Association, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and the Door Kewaunee Business & Education Partnership (DKBEP) in an effort to grow the local skilled workforce while providing real-world learning experiences.
Breaking ground in September 2007, the DKBEP High School Home Construction Project will give Door County students the opportunity to participate in the construction of a new home from the ground up. They will be involved in all aspects of home construction under the direct guidance of a NWTC contracted instructor, Miles Zastrow. The students will be able to gain hands-on practical experience in all of the skills and trades that are part of the construction industry.
About the home: The single story, 1,650 square foot ranch style home has 3 bedrooms which include a master suite, two full bathrooms, two stall garage and a full basement with natural light. The home also has a gas fireplace, first floor laundry, cathedral ceilings, open concept design and a sliding glass door that opens to a deck. The house will be located in the Spring Oaks subdivision near the Sturgeon Bay YMCA. In May 2008, when completed, the home will be for sale on the open real estate market. All revenue generated from the sale of the home will go towards paying program expenses and future high school home construction projects.
To date, the following businesses have donated their services and construction materials for the 2007/08 project. The Door County Home Builders Association has agreed to provide all the construction site tools and equipment, and is calling on its members to help by donating the needed supplies. To obtain a list of tools and supplies, please contact Nancy Harvey to have the list forwarded to you. Portside Builders donated the home plans and will serve as project advisor, ERA Starr Reality will donate brokerage fees and Baylake Bank is providing financing for the project.
The DKBEP is serving as the coordinator for the program and are going to need all different types of services and skilled people who are willing to teach their trade at a donated or special discounted rate. If you are interested in becoming a partner in the project, Tara LeClair, manager of the DKBEP can be reached at 743-3113 ext. 205. The DCHBA strongly encourages its members to become involved with this worthwhile project. PartnerBenefits.pdf
